The two-minute film - which runs to a longer, four-minute version in the US - sees the adorable alien return to Earth to reconnect with his old friend, learning about all of the world's new, advanced technology in the process.
They did a very nice job of making the new CGI E.T. look and move like the clunky (but so lifelike) practical E.T. puppet designed by Carlo Rambaldi. Watch the E.T. Christmas commercial below.
In the holiday ad for American digital cable provider Xfinity, which premiered Thursday morning during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, E.T.is seen reuniting with a grown-up Elliot (played again by Henry Thomas), who is now a middle-aged married man with two kids. "It's really a win-win", the actor said in a statement.
But then, it's time for E.T.to go back home - and he breaks our hearts. All the viewer has to do is say "E.T. Phone Home" into their voice remote. Lance Acord directed the E.T. short. "Looking at the storyboards, I could see exactly why Steven [Spielberg] was really behind it, because the integrity of the story isn't lost in this retelling".
The ad sees everyone's favourite extraterrestrial arrive back on Earth once more, only this time he meets Elliott's children and, well, it's just magical and you need to see it for yourself. If not, remember your old pal E.T.is always with you - in here.
"Our goal is to show how Xfinity and Sky technology connects family, friends and loved ones, which is so important during the holidays".
"People don't care about technology inherently. It's a ideal story for the holidays at a time when our emotions are very close to the surface".
