Police respond to 'active shooter situation' in Jersey City

Jean Jadezaia, spokeswoman for the Hudson County Sheriff's Office, told CNN that it was an "active shooting situation".

Authorities say that multiple people are dead after a shooting in Jersey City.

It happened in the vicinity of Martin Luther King Drive near Bayview Avenue Tuesday afternoon. The area has a Catholic school, a few convenience stories, a kosher supermarket and a hair stylist, AP said.

Multiple victims have been reported inside the store, though officials have remained mum on the specifics.

All schools in the city have been put on lockdown, but all students are safe, the authorities assured.

New Jersey Transit Police reported Hudson Bergen Light Rail was suspended in the area, along with all bus service on the West Side Branch.

The governor of the USA state of New Jersey said on Tuesday that police officers have been shot in the Jersey City standoff.

The outlet said the shoot-out began when an officer investigating a homicide approached the suspects and was then shot and killed as the suspects fled to the bodega.

A WNBC reporter this afternoon said they heard gunshots "for about ten minutes straight" and that law enforcement sources said one officer was shot in the head and is now in critical condition.

"I have every confidence in our law enforcement professionals to ensure the safety of the community and resolve this situation". It's like firecrackers going off, ' Patel said.

The New Jersey State PBA has tweeted out a request for prayers right now for Jersey City officers.

New Jersey State Police said on Twitter that T.E.A.M.S., Canine Unit, Bomb Unit, Marine Services, Aviation, Field Ops, Tactical Patrol, Central Security, Trafficking, and Emergency Response Bureau were all aiding police in the investigation.

The White House tweeted that President Donald Trump has been briefed about the incident. "I got out of the auto and I see cops ducked down, and cops getting out of the way", witness Brian Clark said.
