Following the accusations of covering up the truth about the epidemic, Zhou made the latest comments to state broadcaster CCTV today.

China's National Health Commission said on Monday that there were 2,744 confirmed infections nationwide, an increase of 769 from the previous day.

There is also the nearly staggering contrast in how the crisis has been handled since the central government got involved.

Hong Kong, where there are eight cases of contagion, has imposed a ban on access to those who have visited Hubei in the past 14 days. With Canada became the 16th country to have reported cases, the other countries which have been affected so far include Australia, France, Japan, Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United States, Vietnam, China, and Hong Kong.

Attempts to halt the spread of the virus have so far failed.

With China battling with the deadly coronavirus outbreak, an eerie video of Wuhan showed empty streets and deserted shops in the city.

The major USA indexes gave up a significant amount of their gains for January on Monday and bond yields moved lower as investors headed for safer holdings.

China has extended the Lunar New Year holiday to help contain the virus, now spreading around the world.

The US cases are in Washington, Chicago, Southern California and Arizona. The travel industry is more reliant on Chinese travellers now. The biggest impact will be on travel, hotels and restaurants but Chinese retail spending, factory output and investment also would suffer if the outbreak and quarantines last, forecasters say. Japan was also making preparations to fly its nationals out of Wuhan.

The country's health minister, Ma Xiaowei, said the virus's ability to spread appears to be increasing as officials warn the virus is contagious before symptoms appear, making it hard to contain, the BBC reported.

The mayor of Wuhan, the epicentre of China's coronavirus outbreak, drew ire from Chinese internet users for what many saw as an overgenerous self-evaluation of his handling of an interview with state television - despite also offering to step down.

That outbreak which occurred from 2002 to 2003, which originated in southern China, killed almost 800 around the world. The tourism sector in Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong are the most vulnerable.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that five cases were confirmed in the U.S.by Sunday, including two in California and one each in Washington, Arizona, and IL.

The communist regime also announced Sunday a temporary ban on wildlife trade, while the assumption that the epidemic was part of a market in Wuhan where this type of animal was sold was deemed "highly likely By the Chinese Center for Disease Control".

This has unnerved many residents in the city-state who still vividly remember SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), the last major Coronavirus pandemic to sweep the country which resulted in 32 deaths between November 2002 and July 2003.
