NBA’s Radical New All-Star Game Format Includes Kobe Bryant Tribute

The new changes include resetting the score at the start of the second and third quarters, and a new "target score" finish, which will honor the late Los Angeles Lakers star.

Kyle Lowry of the National Basketball Association champion Toronto Raptors is headed back to the game, as are Miami's Jimmy Butler, Philadelphia's Ben Simmons, Milwaukee's Khris Middleton, Portland's Damian Lillard, Denver's Nikola Jokic, Houston's Russell Westbrook and - for the first time since 2016 - Oklahoma City's Chris Paul.

For instance, if the cumulative score of the first three quarters is 100-95, the Final Target Score would be set at 124 points. A $100,000 donation will be made to the organization chosen by the winning team of each of the first three quarters. The teams will then play an untimed fourth quarter and the first team to reach the final target score will win the All-Star Game.

These efforts will culminate during the All-Star Game when each team will play for a Chicago-based charity beneficiary, as selected by team captains Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and Lakers forward LeBron James.

Each of the first three quarters will be worth $100,000, and the money will roll over to the next quarter in the event of a tie. The winning team will earn an extra $200,000 for its community organization.

The Australian was not chosen as a starter in a vote by fans, current National Basketball Association players and media members, but National Basketball Association coaches ensured Simmons would play in the February 16 All-Star game in Chicago. If one team leads the entire way through, the losing team will still get $100,000 to donate to its charity, anyway.

The West's starters are LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Luka Doncic and James Harden. Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were killed along with seven others in a helicopter crash on Sunday morning in Calabasas, California.

Simmons will join Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Kris Middleton, Kyle Lowry, Jayson Tatum and Domantas Sabonis as reserves for Team Giannis (Eastern Conference). Additional plans to honor Bryant during NBA All-Star 2020 in Chicago will be announced at a later date.
