Cathay Pacific asks staff to take unpaid leave amid coronavirus outbreak

Cathay Pacific announced it will be reducing capacity to Mainland China by 90 percent, as a measure of precaution against the Coronavirus spread.

Shortly after Tang's video was released, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said any visitors from mainland China would be placed in compulsory quarantine for 14 days.

Cabinet ministers unveiled the quarantine plans just 6 hours before the new policy was due to come on.

On Saturday, Hong Kong will introduce quarantine for two weeks for all people arriving from the mainland. Chinese and global visitors can quarantine in hotels or any other accommodation they have organized.

Hong Kong Airlines said on Friday that it will slash 400 jobs and cut operations given weak travel demand because of the coronavirus outbreak, adding to financial woes for the city's second-largest carrier.

"The problem of supply shortages does not exist", said Chief Administrative Secretary Matthew Cheung. "There is no need for the public to worry", it said.

The new coronavirus that emerged in a Chinese market at the end of past year has killed at least 490 people and spread around the world.

The flu-like coronavirus can be transmitted from person to person and has infected more than 31,000 and claimed 636 lives so far on the mainland.

However, those who have family, work and home obligations are expected to stay in China despite the lockdown in many areas and the infection of more than 20,000 with the virus and a death toll of 427.

Hong Kong has 25 confirmed cases with one patient who died earlier this week.

Hong Kong Airlines has announced a big new round of layoffs. Some medical staff have been on strike for the past three days, demanding a full border closure.
