USWNT qualify for Olympics, easily as ever (and that's a problem)

Samantha Mewis sent a cross into the box where Williams knocked the ball down to Horan for the goal.

On Friday night, the soccer team - who won the FIFA World Cup championship last summer - clinched a 4-0 win over Mexico in their regional Olympic qualifying tournament, securing a spot in the 2020 Olympics in Japan. "There were ups and downs in the game". "Canada once again proved they're a great team and they're well organized, and I think they're very discipline. I think every time we were able to score it helped us kind of reset ourselves". Christen Press started and her streak of scoring in six straight games ended.

Eighth-ranked Canada, bronze medal winners at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, have won all four of their matches and head to Sunday's final against the US having yet to concede a goal. Canada and the USA had qualified for the Olympics with semifinal wins Friday over Costa Rica and Mexico, respectively.

The top two CONCACAF finishers will qualify for the Olympics.

"Canada is always a really hard team, we obviously have a big rivalry with them and of course they're playing well defensively - and offensively".

For this tournament, the US returns 18 of 20 players from the squad that came away victorious at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. Canada will be competing in its fourth consecutive Summer Games tournament this summer.

"Coming into this game we had the same attitude as the game before and the game before".

The U.S., ranked No. 1 in the world, has never lost a qualifying game and has never failed to qualify for the Olympics.

By winning its group handily, eighth-ranked Canada avoided facing the United States in the semis.

Mexico made the field for the 2004 Olympics, but has not been back since. However, Mexico is on the rise, boosted by a domestic women's league. The country won its first two matches before falling 2-0 to Canada.

"The competition that they have here in the US, the number of options that they have to play, I think every practice is probably tougher than a lot of their matches", Mexico coach Christopher Cuellar said. "It's so easy to play a team that you're better than, and then drop to their level", he said. Substitute Press made it four for United States of America with a deft chipped goal. Neither Press nor Horan started against Mexico.

Lavelle's opening goal in the fifth minute was somewhat reminiscent of her strike that sealed the USWNT's victory over the Netherlands in the Women's World Cup final-her sharply-hit, left-footed strike found the bottom right corner after she ran on to a neat flicked assist from Megan Rapinoe.

Freed up by a fine pass from Sinclair, Huitema beat several defenders in the 58th minute but her shot deflected wide. It was Mewis' 18th worldwide goal.

Press has received more opportunities on the field as of late with the absence of Alex Morgan, who is on maternity leave. She was honored by CONCACAF before the match.

It was less than eight months ago that in another game of massive significance the Canadian women's soccer team left the pitch devastated. "They're one of the best teams in the world, top 10 in the world, so it's not going to be easy, if you sit back it will be really hard", US coach Vlatko Andonovski said. It was a stunning result that forced the United States to book their WWC spot via a nerve-jangling intercontinental playoff win over Italy.

Attendance was announced at 17,489 at Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the LA Galaxy.
