Coronavirus Gets Official Title: COVID-19


That is because tens of millions of people are expected to return to cities across the country after the extended Lunar New Year holidays.

The virus was officially named "COVID-19" at a conference in Geneva held by the World Health Organisation (WHO), where the body's chief said countries had a chance of stopping its global spread.

President Xi Jinping touts "positive results" from efforts to contain coronavirus epidemic but warns country "must not relax" its efforts as death toll climbs to 1,113.

Ninety-seven deaths and 2,015 new infections were reported over a 24-hour interval in mainland China, according to the country's National Health Commission.

Reuters has reported that the number of cases of infection with the new coronavirus in China has stabilised, but that apparent slowdown in the epidemic spread should be viewed with "extreme caution", the head of the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.

An additional 39 people on board the Diamond Princess have tested positive for Covid-19, raising the total of cases to 174, while thousands of passengers and crew face a second week in quarantine.

The ship was placed in quarantine for two weeks when it arrived in Tokyo on February 3 after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong was diagnosed with the virus.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, reiterated Tuesday that the risk to people in Canada - including people living near CFB Trenton in Ontario, where individuals who were repatriated from China are living under quarantine - remains low.

Most of the deaths and majority of cases have been in central Hubei province, whose capital, Wuhan, is the epicentre of the outbreak. These include a sharply slowing domestic economy, the trade war with the USA and push-back on China's increasingly aggressive foreign policies.

"A virus can have more powerful consequences than any terrorist action".

Without enough facilities to handle the number of cases, Wuhan has been building prefabricated hospitals and converting a gym and other large spaces to house patients and try to isolate them from others.

Traffic remained light in Beijing, and many people were still working at home. The virus belongs to the same family of viruses as the organisms which caused the SARS outbreak of 2003 and the MERS cases reported in 2012.
